Turning Torso
Malmö’s most iconic landmark towers 54 floors high, with a total floor area nearly twice the size of MFF’s football stadium. In this nearby building (IDstory), tall round “towers” were also built—but here they were stacked side by side :-)
Turning Torso is easily visible from Lund, which boasts a university founded way back in 1666. Malmö and Lund enjoy an ongoing “friendly rivalry.”
The Museum of Modern Art in New York (MoMA) recently held an exhibition about tall buildings around the globe—Turning Torso was featured. Click the link below to discover more.
Inspiration and Role Models
The official website reads: “HSB Turning Torso represents a human body in a turning motion.” The building’s architect, Santiago Calatrava, is said to have drawn inspiration from a gently twisted sculpture.
This sounds appealing, but is it truly the whole story? After all, saying you were inspired by a twisted piece of Italian pasta or a DNA molecule might seem either too trivial—or, in the case of DNA, almost impossible to fathom.
Here, we suggest the idea that the real inspiration behind Turning Torso is the DNA molecule itself.
DNA is an acronym, just like HSBꜜ.
Turning DNA
Deoxyribonucleic acid ↗ svW is a chemical molecule that carries genetic information—discovered as early as the 1800s.
Most people know that the 1962 Nobel Prize in Medicine↗ was awarded to Watson and Crick for work on DNA’s spiral structure.
Watson wrote about this in his thrilling book The Double Helix. If you want an introduction, read this article in Forskning och Framsteg.↗
“Recombinant DNA” is an older name for some genetic engineering techniques. Read more about genetic techniques↗.
Perhaps pt-30 time a “spiral building” is constructed, it should be called the reTurning Torso. Rumor has it there are more in the works.
