Johan Henrik Thomander
Bishop, professor
1798-1865
Born June 16, 1798 in Fjelkinge, died in 1865 in Lund. Professor of theology. Worked as bishop in Lund from 1856. Made a number of translations of Aristophanes and Shakespeare. For his linguistic and rhetorical talents, Thomander was elected to the Swedish Academy (chair no. 18) in 1855, the year before he became a bishop. He also sat in the Swedish Parliament from 1840..

In 1895, Thomander's daughters, Ida and Emma, donated to the university the property on Sandgatan that still constitutes the Thomanderska Studenthemmet (for well-behaved and impoverished boys, traditionally often student comic actors).
Biskopshuset (IDstory) which is today the university's meeting and party venue is located directly across the street.

You can read more about the cemetary Östra kyrkogården in Lund (IDstory) which tells about the history of the cemetery and some recent events.
