History and more history
The house was built in 1914 for the famous Baltic Exhibition. The whole city was to celebrate the future, which temporarily "ended" with the outbreak of war, forcing several of the exhibitors to quickly return home.
The house has always been a hotel. For a long time it was run by the Salvation Army. More about the history of the house ↓.

The house and its neighboring house were designed by architect Oscar Emil Hägg. He was inspired by the Renaissance from the 16th century. Finely cut granite is mixed with hand-made bricks from Ifö Chamotte and Kaolin factories. Read more about clay and chamotte↗ svW.
At the turn of the last century,Stortorget (IDstory) two competing pharmacies, Fläkta Örn on the soutrh side and The Lion who moved to the east side in 1898. It was " the Lion house" which was demolished to make way for the Hotel Anglais - today Scandic Stortorget hotel.
The Salvation Army
In December 1944, Stridsropet wrote "that the Salvation Army hotel has become a factor to be reckoned with in the country's hotel and travel industry." The first hotel had been opened in 1929.

A bill from Anglais in 1938 could list a room charge of 8 kronor. Pilsner, Pommac and Svagdricka were printed lines on the bill.

Five Conference Rooms
The conference rooms have historical names. Isak Slaktare, Adolf Faxe, Per Weijer, Frans Suell (IDstory) och Laroche.
The images shows the Adolf Faxe-room. If you look up from the table, you will see Lilla Torg on the right and Stortorget on the left.
Adolf Faxe (1811-1878) was a merchant and later a property owner and traded in timber, coal and punch, among other things. He is buried at Gamla kyrkogården (IDstory) i Malmö.
He married the sister of Frans Henrik Kockum (IDstory).
