Metropol & Akademibokhandeln

When Akademibokhandeln moved into the former cinema Metropol’s premises, they continued a Malmö tradition—many of the city’s bookstores have occupied old movie theaters. Falkmans, Envalls, and Lundgren’s bookshops all operated in former cinemas.

Akademibokhandeln closed in 2014.

Metropol was Malmö’s longest-running cinema. The Stora Biografteatern opened here in 1907. The current premises date to 1912. In 1964, the Metropol cinema was incorporated into a new building on the site. After many renovations and modifications, films were shown here until 2001.

Among the last films screened were “O Brother, Where Art Thou?” and “Dancer in the Dark.”

From Books to Gallery

Once the bookstore and its café closed, a gallery moved in some years later. Or more precisely, a commercial art shop with art of rather dubious value. Stroll by and treat yourself to some genuine chocolate from the neighboring shop.
