Södertull in Malmö

In Malmö, the winds meet in many places. Södertull, once not only a gathering spot but also the site of a city customs post, earned its name from some 200 years of toll collection starting in the early 1600s.

Today, Södertull sits along Malmö’s main north-south corridor. A few years ago, Malmö took part in an innovative EU project (IDstory) that explored, among other things, what happened to the formerly dominant east-west axis.

The striking staircase at the canal is built of rough-hewn, cross-hammered Bjärlöv granite. The handrails are dressed in ceramic, designed by Gustaf Kraitz.

In the center of your gaze, you’ll glimpse Gustav Adolfs torg. On average, 38% of people in the scene are heading there, while 54% are making their way south toward Malmö’s other hub, Triangeln. Some 2% have chosen to relax on the new sun terrace, and 3% just linger. If you look closely, you might spot a small sign on the bridge’s east side.

Buildings at Södertull

In the left (IDstory) of the two central buildings, there was a beloved bookstore for many years—sadly, it closed in 2014. Still, the shop is worth a visit to admire its beautiful ceiling.

In the right-hand building (IDstory) you can shop for clothes or work in the offices above. The house’s IDstory reveals more about its tenants and their web addresses.

You can also explore views looking westward from here.

About the Per Albin Line

Per Albin ↗ svW was Hansson by surname, and served as both Sweden’s war minister and prime minister.

The sign serves as a reminder that World War II brought great uncertainty even to Sweden. Over 1,000 bunkers and defensive posts were built to prevent invasion.
