A.P. Sjöbergs Fabriker

Axel Paulus Sjöberg began his career as an intern at the trading house J.H. Dieden in Malmö.

In 1864 he established a chalk factory in Södra Sallerup and thus laid the foundation for AP Sjöbergs Fabriker, which was soon expanded with the Malmö wagon grease factory, eventually the largest in Sweden. Later, the Kreosot factory and Malmö's new soap factory were added.

The company's logo, a winged horse, is preserved in the pavement outside "Sjöbergska Palatset" on Östergatan.

Advertising text in Malmö address calendar 1915: Manufacture of all kinds of soap, toilet and laundry soaps, carriage grease and carriage lubricant, frost-butterfly ointment, etc. Specialty: Chromol soap.

After A.P. Sjöberg's death, the factories were run by the family, but new technology and increased competition made it profitable to merge the companies. MOHAB in Malmö bought A.P. Sjöberg's chemical engineering factories in 1930.

The Sjöberg family

Ida Sjöberg, née Dahlberg (1857-1941) gave her name to the house ”Idaborg” on Sallerupsvägen and has thus given the name to Idaborgsgatan. She also sat on the board together with her sons. Her daughter Sigrid married the chalk company's CEO Einar Hörstedt.

The son Arvid became CEO of the companies after his father and the son Hugo became a board member. Arvid sat on the chalk company's board for 49 years and Hugo for 44 years. The grandson Hugo Sjöberg J:r was CEO and owner of AB Malmökrita well into the 1980s.

They also owned large land properties that were farmed under the name Kvarnby Jordbruks AB, the land was sold to Malmö Municipality in 1965.

The remaining business was run by Hugo Sjöberg J:r under the name Malmökrita. The company was later sold to Faxekalk in Denmark and is now part of the Belgian company Lhoist. The operations in Malmö have been closed for several years.
