Gustaf Rydberg
Gustaf Rydberg
1835 - 1933
Artist, ”Royal painter”
Gustaf Rydberg was born in Malmö, studied during the years 1852-1864 at the Art Academies in Copenhagen, Stockholm, and like so many other artists at this time in Düsseldorf where he completed his studies.
He gained a benefactor in King Charles XV who became a close friend and benefactor.
Travels in the Nordic countries and Europe were followed by trips home to his beloved Skåne. He is considered the discoverer of the Skåne region..
His fame came to rest on these landscape paintings and he inspired an entire generation of artists to discover nature.

Where previously people had only been inspired by paintings, they now went out into the landscape with an easel and captured the light, shadows, haze and the play of colors on the ground.
In 1920, the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts organized a large anniversary exhibition in Stockholm in connection with Rydberg's 85th birthday. The catalogue contained 260 issues, a large artistic career that was to be summed up..
At Malmö Museum, a large collection of his works has been created through purchases and donations. A visit is recommended.
The statue was made in 1934 by Sven Andersson
Gustaf Rydberg died in Malmö in 1933 at the age of 98..
