museum tram in Malmö
Johan Schlasberg

At least 24 times a year this well-preserved historic carriage makes its track-bound journey. Now it will turn right between the Technical Museum and Fiskehoddorna and its final stop at Banérs kaj, a quiet and somewhat nostalgic canal corner in itself. On its journey it has pinged, the red ceiling light has signaled Stop and some have got off, others on. Maybe at the library Stadsbiblioteket (IDstory).

The museum tram line is run by a group of unpaid enthusiasts. Many are elderly but some of a youthful age could be spotted. Ticket revenue contributes to the continued maintenance and renovation of yet another tram.

Tram driver Anders has left his seat for a minute or so and with a long metal rod in his hand he has changed the gear towards Banérskajen. Which was once a gallows hill where those condemned to death ended their days. The word 'ban' is archaic for death. a 'baneman'ꜜ was a murderer. But back to life and the joy of the tram ride.

The last tour of the year according to the holes

Your ticket is valid all day and it has real holes in it. Curious children stand next to the driver and adults get another picture theme to take home. If you go on the morning trip, you can also buy fresh fish, maybe a piece of herring for a "sitting time" in Slottsparken. The first departure from Banérskajen is 12.00 and then two or three times per hour during the season. The last trips are 16.00 and 16.24.

Three trams

The museum association has three rarities. Car 20 left the factory in 1907 and was completely renovated before the Museum Line started in 1987. Car 100, known as the Kockum's car, is from 1906 and was completely renovated again on the track in 1996. Enthusiasts always have projects going on, an important driving force, and there is car 42 under renovation and plans for longer track lengths. Ask the uniformed staff, they are looking into the future.

The trams in Lund

After ten years of often heated debate, the neighboring city of Lund got a tram line from Central Station to the Brunnshög research center. It was so modern that it broke down for several months. But now it's running. No drivers or conductors. If you've bought a ticket from Malmö, it's just a few steps to the journey through Lund towards the Hospital, Ideon, LTH and a periphery that wants to become a large center.
