Krognoshuset

The Lund Factory and Crafts Association built a new building at Bredgatan 5 in 1903. On the stairs to the second floor, just to the left and visible from the courtyard, is this glass mosaic of Krognoshuset in a window. The glass painting was made by Anders Nilsson.

Who made this work of art?
In the same Handicraft House there is a large floss carpet, newly renovated, with a picture of the Krognoshuset in one of its corners.
The artist is very well known and his work can be seen at the Modernist Exhibition at Kulturen in Lund, among other places. Look futher down↓
Krognoshuset - its history

How much of a house do you need to see to recognize it? A famous bus and a famous house. If you live in Lund, a fairly small part of this house is enough. It is from the 14th century and has been rebuilt many times. The ground level was about two meters below today's level and the house was part of a larger farm complex.
The name Krognoshuset comes from a Danish family (Skåne was Danish until 1658) who who actually were not named Krognos↗ but was given the nickname due to the distinctive noses of some prominent members.
One of the most famous owners of Krognoshuset was the Lund professor of medicine Johan Jacob Döbelius; he founded Ramlösa Brunn in 1707 and was superintendent there for five years. Another Lund professor of medicine Eberhard Rosén-Rosenblad (IDstory) held this position from 1760-95, in addition to being involved in founding Lund Hospital and much else.
From outside to inside
The Aura art association has been organizing exhibitions in Krognoshuset since 1929. The walls are thick and the rooms are small, but there is space for interesting works that would probably have been packed like stamps in the nearby Konsthallen.

More about the inside of Krognoshuset
You have entered the house and just to your right is a person sitting in a small and cozy room. It could be the curator of the art association. Jin Hwa Borstam.
Most of the current exhibition is located an 89 cm wide staircase upstairs or a staircase downstairs, 74 cm wide. Or narrow.
The art assocition Aura currently has approximately 400 members.

More history about Krognoshuset
This blue block sign is a good fit for a family that was ennobled in 1717. On the first page of this story it was mentioned that Johan Jacob Döbelius owned the house. He was a capable person in many ways and he obviously made such valuable contributions Denna blå kvartersskylt passar bra till en ätt som adlades 1717. På första sidan i denna berättelse nämndes att Johan Jacob Döbelius ägt huset. Han var en duktig person i många avseenden och han gjorde uppenbarligen så värdefulla insatser

for the country that Charles XII who was in Lund in 1716 ennobled him and J J, as we had said today, took the name von Döbeln.
Way back, you used to read Fänrik Stål's legends at school, and one of Johan Ludvig Runeberg's heroes was Döbeln of Jutas. Exactly: they are related and the Russians' conqueror at the bridge at Jutas is the grandson of "our" owner of Krognoshuset. There is thus a clear connection between the mineral water on the conference tables and a Swedish war in Finland against the Russians. And this can be traced via a sign that is hidden by a bus on the first page, but can be seen on the facade around the corner from the entrance to the Aura art association. A copy of the sign should be on the inside.
If you wnt to read more about the history of Krognoshuset↗ There is a good story on the Aura art association's website..

GAN - Gösta Adrian-Nilsson
The picture of Krognoshuset at the beginning of this story is made by GAN (IDstory) who is considered one of the true pioneers of Swedish modernism. Born in Lund he rests at the Norra cemetery in his city of birth. It should be added that the image on the carpet may also be inspired by Liberiet, which is also an "ancient" house with stepped stone gables located right next to the cathedral in Lund.

Muren was built in 1917 in red brick and the clock tower had a clock made by Lund clockmaker August Andersson. When the new art gallery was built in 1957, both the wall and the clockwork were demolished.

Here the stained glass from the first page is repeated, so that it is easier to compare the different images. Note that in all three images you see part of the cathedral.
The house took on its current form in 1916 when several older and connected buildings were demolished. All under the direction of the cathedral architect Theodor Wåhlin.
