Gustaf Adofs torg 51
in Malmö
The Odd Fellow palace
Corner of Stora Nygatan and Engelbrektsgatan. Odd Fellow Palace was built in 1904 in a heavy but not overloaded Art Nouveau style, with authentic materials throughout. This was as a reaction to the mass-produced building details of the late 19th century. Huset är granne med Gamla kyrkogården (IDstory).
Jugend or Art Nouveau, celebrated craftsmanship. The houses were not to be like each other, they were to be unique. Read more about Gustav Adolfs Torg (IDstory).
Detail on the facade
The architects were August M. Lindvall and Oscar Hägg. Lindwall was responsible for the construction and Hägg for the architectural design. The Odd Fellow Lodge No. 3 Amicitia was the building contractor. The order originated in England, but it was in the USA that it developed into the worldwide movement it is today during the 19th century. In 1884, Sweden was able to start its first fraternal lodge, No. 1 Scania in Malmö.
The Swedish Odd Fellow Order currently has over 44,000 members - of whom about 25% are women - distributed across 289 lodges. The four commandments of the Odd Fellow Order and the Order's main task are to visit the sick, help the needy, bury the dead and raise the orphans.
Cinema and bookstore
The building housed one of Malmö's very first permanent cinemas. "Grand Kinematograf". This is where Envall's bookstore later came to be located. For some reason, the city's bookstores have a penchant for taking over cinemas. Falkman's was partly located in the Scala/Crabs premises and Lundgren's moved in 2002 from the Biorama premises on Södergatan to Stora Biografteatern/Metropol on Södra Tullgatan..
