The old Theater
This little gem of a building at Gustav Adolfs Torg (IDstory) has a longer history than one might think. The house was built in 1809 and contained both a restaurant and Malmö Theatre. The architect was HofConducteuren Anders Sundström.
The modern glass section was formerly a theater hall.

The restaurant, which came to be called Stadt Hamburg, had a garden that went all the way down to the canal. There was a music stage and outdoor seating. The theater, where all traveling theater companies had an excellent stage, was of a classic design with parquet and two rows. 450 people could then sit in the hall. Later, they dug out under the theater and got another row and thus more seats.
For 130 years, all the major plays were performed here. The last performance was given in 1938. By then, the Hippodrome had taken over as the theatre venue. But by 1944, the new City Theatre on Fersens väg was already completed, and ten years later, Hipp was also closed.
Curiosities
The Stadt Hamburg restaurant used to attract people by doing various tricks in its garden. In 1846, large balloons were released from there. This was before flying and nobody was in the balloon. An eyewitness tells:
"Three large Pinnedantian Montgolfierian balloons that have never been shown here before, which disappeared from the audience's eyes with a most unusual speed, after they had filled up in the audience's presence and changed color after their ascent."!

More history
When the theatre was built, Gustav Adolfs torg was completely new. During the first decade of the 19th century, the old fortress walls that had surrounded Malmö since the 17th century were demolished. New canals were dug outside the old moats, thus creating new land. It was then called Nya Staden (the New City) and included Drottningtorget (IDstory), Norregatan, Stora Nygatan and Gustav Adolfs torg - Named after Gustav IV. The square stood deserted for many years, sheep grazed here until the mid-19th century.
