Bernhard Cronholm
1813-1871, Newspaperman and printer.
On his tombstone is the title Phil. Doctor. That does not cover his activities in life.
After academic studies, Berhard Cronholm became an associate professor of chemistry at Lund University. He was active in student organizations and worked for the Scandinavian idea that Sweden, Norway and Denmark were a unit with a common history and a common future..
In 1838 he opened a bookstore at Stortorget (IDstory). Here he also started a printing press in 1848. With the printing press as a base, he published several newspapers and magazines, of which Snäll-Posten, today Sydsvenskan, became the most viable. It is still alive after more than 150 years!
1848 was a turbulent year in Europe. The February Revolution in Paris echoed in Sweden with riots in Stockholm, Gothenburg and Norrköping. The military was called out, resulting in several deaths. Because of these events, Cronholm brought forward the start of SnällPosten. He was lucky, the flow of news increased quickly.
During the summer, Malmö's population temporarily doubled (from 12,000 to over 22,000) when the government was moved here, headed by King Oscar I. With him came the court, diplomats and military troops. The reason was the war between Denmark and Germany. With Oscar I as mediator, an armistice was reached here in Malmö between Germany and Denmark..
However, it would turn out that the Scandinavian unity was broken. Sweden did not support Denmark militarily during the coming wars and Denmark lost Southern Jutland in 1864 and thus two-fifths of its territory and half of its population to the now unified Germany.
The newspapers of the time did not contain direct reports or interviews. In Snäll-Posten, Cronholm wrote general columns about the present, chronicles, reviews, etc. Otherwise, the newspaper contained notices about foreign and domestic events, advertisements, etc.
Snäll-Posten's circulation fluctuated between 1000 and 2000 copies and was initially published twice a week. When Sydsvenska Dagbladet started with Carl Herslow as editor, Cronholm increased its publication to six days a week. Bernhard Cronholm died in 1871 and in 1872 the newspaper was merged into Sydsvenska Dagbladet.

His grave at Gamla kyrkogården (IDstory)
which is close to Gustav Adolfs Torg (IDstory).
