After 3 years of construction, Apoteket Lejonet was inaugurated in 1898. The builder was pharmacist John Tesch and the building soon came to be known as the Tesch Palace. Malmö had about 60,000 inhabitants at this time. The competitor Fläkta Örn ↓ used to be located diagonally across the street, where the cinema is located today. Wall advertising

Stortorget 1906
Advertising on the facade in 1900

A classic attraction at Stortorget (IDstory) which, although recently restored, dates back to the beginning of the 20th century.

The most recent restoration, which was more of a re-creation, of the advertising paintings on the wall was done in 1994. For a period there was also an advertisement for Malmö Folkbank, which was founded by pharmacist John Tesch in 1905..

The advertising on the wall has changed over the years. Before the bottle was added - on the wall :-) - there was an advertisement for Apoteket Lejonet.

From Fläkta Örn to Saturnus

Pharmacist Fritz Borg, owner of the Fläkta Örn pharmacy in Malmö, starts together with laboratory technician Anders Nilsson the company Saturnus for the production of essences and extracts for the manufacture of liqueurs and spirits.

In the picture, Gustav Adolfs Torg can be seen in the background. Where Fläkta Örn was located today is he cinema Spegeln.

In the back rooms of the Fläkta Örn pharmacy at Stortorget in Malmö, sit laboratory technician Anders Nilsson and pharmacist Fritz Borg. Nilsson develops an idea and pharmacist Borg listens. Nilsson wants to start a domestic production of essences and extracts for liqueur and spirit manufacturers. Nilsson is responsible for the knowledge of manufacturing and products. Resources, production technology and business acumen are Borg's areas. Borg says Yes. The year is 1893 and the company Saturnus is a fact.

It took a year to set up the production apparatus in the back rooms of the pharmacy. Sales were good and increased until 1905, when monopoly concerns and proposals for an intoxicating liquor regulation threatened. The company then began to look at a new type of drink that had taken off on the continent - soft drink or lemonade.

Time to move

It was a success and the pharmacy became too small. 1912 they moved to the old Malmö Cigar and tobacco factory at Grynbodgatan. Se mer historik på Saturnus.se

The Fläkta Örn pharmacy

In 1908, the Fläkta Örn pharmacy moved from Stortorget to the so-called Valhallapalatset (IDstory) at Gustav Adolfs torg. Spies later had a travel agency for a few years in the old pharmacy on the corner, today there is a fashion store.

There is still a pharmacy in Malmö called Fläkta Örn. It is now part of the corporate group Apotek Hjärtat. _it is located at Svansjögatan 1 in Bellevuegården.

apoteket Lejonet i Malmö

The first line is from 1571 and says that ... On April 4, the Danish King Frederick II issues the 'oldest known privilege' for pharmacists in Malmö to Erasmus von der Brucke.

From a note in 1821 we can read During the 19th century, pharmacists also engaged in the cultivation of medicinal plants and the manufacture of mineral water.. In 1920, the pharmacy was sold to the highest bidder for the last time and since 1971, the Lejonet pharmacy has been part of Apoteksbolaget AB..

This may later develop into a more detailed description of the history of Apoteket Lejonet.. The main source is Jubileumsskriften "Apoteket Lejonet i Malmö 1571 - 1971". This is in turn a special edition from the Swedish Pharmaceutical Journal..

When you leave the pharmacy, you can hardly avoid the happy band of musicians who just passed by.

Pharmacies and monopoly?

Apoteket Lejonet is today part of the state-owned Apoteket AB. One could ask whether the reregulation of pharmacies from the old monopoly is a success? Research shows that the benefits many are talking about today could very well have been realized within the framework of the monopoly. I published an article back in 2004 about what I call Monopolies and Open monopolies.
