Eduardo Chillida in Lund

Chillida (1924–2002) is considered one of the world’s 10 most important sculptors of the 20th century. This suggests that one might not simply walk past the sculpture Space of Peace when crossing Stortorget. Statues of kings on horseback may not hold much value on the art market, but this sculpture is worth at least as much as 5–10 fire trucks. Yet another reason to get to know Chillida.

The sculpture has now been moved from the square due to reconstruction work.

The Balloon Seller

Early one morning in March. Offered the balloon seller 20 kronor if he takes a few steps closer to the sculpture. The balloons longing to rise and the sculpture always striving downward – in one single image. The man would like to, but politely declines, since he does not want to risk municipal officials claiming that he stood too close to Eduardo Chillida. That could cost him his permit. It is still morning, only five minutes have passed.

The six stone blocks that make up Space of Peace are meant to symbolize peace. They can be divided or opened once there is peace on earth. Not exactly a cost that needs to be budgeted. It would be an exciting project for a student to create a 3D animation of how this could look.

Chillida has his own museum in Spain

In 1984 Chillida and his family purchased a piece of land near the city of San Sebastian↗, about 30 kilometers south of the French border. Today the area is a 12-hectare sculpture park – Chillida Leku Museum↗ – with more than 40 sculptures and a museum, a well-known destination.

The museum once (?) had a well-stocked shop

The museum was forced to close in 2011 but has now reopened.

This small pendant is one of many beautiful objects that could be purchased on-site or ordered online.

The shop also carried textiles, ceramics, and other pieces modeled after original works by Chillida. Books, posters, and much more.

Space within Matter – the Tindaya Project

On Fuerteventura in the Canary Islands lies one of Chillida’s latest and still ongoing projects.

In 1996, Chillida stated, when he donated the work to the Canary Islands, that he wanted to create an inner space within the mountain that could offer all people, regardless of race or religion, a sculpture for tolerance.
